An Encounter of a Special Kind

 My father was a medical professional working for a private company in Raniganj in West Bengal.The officers of the company were housed in individual bungalows inside a large campus. Our house was in a comer of the campus. The officers club was adjacent to the boundary wall of our garden. The compound was luxurious with green grass, colourful flowers and a host of tall and majestic trees. The seasonal vegetables in the kitchen gardens of the households and the magnificent trees constantly attracted squirrels and many species of birds; a group of langurs had even made their den in an aswatha tree nearby. They had all become a part and parcel of our existence and daily life.

          एक अविस्मरणीय / अनोखी चकमक पश्चिम बंगालमधील राणीगंज येथे एका खाजगी कंपनीमध्ये माझे वडील वैद्यकीय सेवेत कामाला होते. एका मोठ्या आवारातील स्वतंत्र बंगल्यांमध्ये कंपनीच्या ऑफिसर्सची राहण्याची व्यवस्था केलेली होती. त्या आवाराच्या एका कोपऱ्यावर आमचे घर होते. आमच्या बागेच्या कुंपणाच्या भिंतीला लागूनच ऑफिसर्सचा क्लब होता. रंगीबेरंगी फुले, हिरवळ आणि अनेक उंच डेरेदार वृक्षांनी तो परिसर बहरलेला होता. घराघरांतील स्वयंपाकघरांच्या परसांमध्ये लावलेल्या मोसमी भाज्या आणि बहारदार झाडांमुळे अनेक प्रकारचे पक्षी व खारी इथे कायम आकर्षित होत असत; जवळच अश्वत्थाच्या (पिंपळ) झाडावर वानरांच्या एका टोळीने तर मुक्काम थाटला होता. ते सर्वजण आमच्या अस्तित्वाचा आणि दैनंदिन जीवनाचा जणू अविभाज्य घटक बनले होते.

 

A small incident on a Saturday afternoon left a profound effect on me and unfolded before my eyes a whole new dimension to the wonders of God's creation. It was a few days into the Puja vacation. Just like for any other child, the holidays provided an opportunity for me to become engrossed in various magazines and storybooks published especially for children in the festive season.

          एका शनिवारच्या दुपारी घडलेल्या एका लहानशा घटनेने मात्र माझ्या मनावर सखोल परिणाम केला आणि परमेश्वराच्या अजब किमयेचा एक अनोखा पैलू माझ्यासमोर उलगडला. दुर्गा पूजेची सुट्टी सुरू होऊन थोडे दिवस झाले होते. इतर अनेक मुलांप्रमाणे या सुट्टीत मलाही सणासुदीच्या काळात खास मुलांसाठी प्रकाशित होणाऱ्या विविध मासिके आणि गोष्ट्टींच्या पुस्तकांमध्ये बुडून जाण्याची संधी मिळाली होती.

 

After a hearty lunch, my parents and my younger sisters lay down for an afternoon nap and I settled down with a storybook. The quiet afternoon presented the perfect backdrop for reading an adventure story. The silence was occasionally broken by the sound of my family snoring the intermittent chirping of house sparrows, the harsh cawing of a crow the shrill call of a kite flying high above the ground. Minutes ticked by. I became deeply absorbed in the book.

    दुपारच्या भरपेट जेवणानंतर माझे आईवडील व लहान बहिणी वामकुक्षी घेत पडल्या होत्या आणि मी एक गोष्टींचे पुस्तक घेऊन निवांत बसलो होतो. दुपारचे ते शांत वातावरण एखादी साहस कथा वाचण्यासाठी फारच अनुकूल होते. त्या शांततेला मधूनच माझ्या घरच्यांना घोरणं, चिमण्यांचा चिवचिवाट, अधूनमधून कावळ्यांची काव काव आणि उंचावरून उडत जाणाऱ्या घारीचं कर्कश ओरडणं भंग करीत होतं. थोड्या वेळातच मी पुस्तक वाचण्यात पार गढून गेलो.

Suddenly, I heard a group of street dogs barking furiously in the distance. I chose to ignore the commotion thinking that the pack of dogs might have comered a hapless pig. But soon, the barking became louder and more aggressive and the alarmed cawing of a flock of crows added to the cacophony. I also heard the disturbance approaching closer.

अचानक, मला दूरवर भटक्या कुत्र्यांच्या जमावाचा भेसूर भुंकण्याचा आवाज ऐकू आला. एखादे बिचारे डुक्कर त्या कुत्र्यांच्या तावडीत सापडले असेल असे वाटून प्रथम मी त्या गलक्याकडे दुर्लक्ष केले. मात्र काही वेळात ती कुत्री अधिक त्वेषाने कुंकू लागली आणि कावळ्याच्या भीतीदायक कर्कश ओरडण्याने त्या कोलाहलात आणखीनच भर पडली. मग तो गलका जवळजवळ येत असल्याचे मला जाणवले. माझी उत्सुकता बळावली. पुस्तक बाजूला ठेवून मी काय चाललेय ते पाहण्यासाठी व्हरांड्यात घावलो.

 

Curiosity got the better of me. Leaving the book aside, I rushed to the veranda to see what was going on.

I glanced towards the roof of the club house and saw something horrible. A big male langur, apparently the leader of its group. was holding a baby langur in his hands and mercilessly biting it all over with a definite intent to kill. The helpless mother of the baby and other lesser members of the langur group were scattered on the roofs of the buildings nearby watching the baby being killed. I recalled the terrible custom in the animal clan according to which a dominant male usually does not allow another male baby or adult to survive within its group.

        क्लब हाउसच्या छपराच्या दिशेने नजर टाकतो तर काय, मला तिथे भयंकर काहीतरी दिसले. एक बलदंड वानर-बहुधा त्या टोळीचा म्होरक्या असावा-एका वानराच्या पिल्लाला पकडून, त्याला जीवे मारण्याच्या इरादयाने त्याच्या शरीराचे निर्दयपणे लचके तोडत होता. त्या पिल्लाची केविलवाणी आई वानरी आणि टोळीतले इतर दुर्बळ वानर आजूबाजूच्या इमारतींच्या छपरांवर गोळा होऊन असहाय्यपणे पिल्लाचा जीव जाताना पाहत होते. प्राणी जमातीत वर्चस्व असणारा एक नर वानर सहसा दुसन्या नर वानर पिल्लाला किंवा प्रौद नराला त्यांच्या टोळीत जगू देत नाही, अशी एक भयंकर रूढी आहे, त्याची मला आठवण झाली. 

Without losing any time, I gathered a stout stick in one hand and hurled a piece of stone at the marauding langur. The langur was so infuriated that it hardly took any notice of my assault. But then I started throwing more stones. The dogs on their part raised their pitch of cry.

जराही वेळ न दवडता मी हातात एक भक्कम काठी घेतली आणि त्वेषाने भक्ष्याच्या मागे लागलेल्या त्या वानराच्या दिशेने एक दगड भिरकावला, पण तो वानर इतका आक्रमक आणि हिंस झाला होता की माझ्या हल्ल्याने तो जराही विचलित झाला नाही. मग मी आणखी दगड मारायला सुरुवात केली. कुत्रीदेखील आणखी जोरात भुंकायला लागली.

 

The changed circumstances and the sudden unexpected attack from unknown quarters forced the langur to drop the baby from the sloping roof over the veranda. The baby was listless and appeared to be dead. As its body started to slide down, the excitement of the pack of dogs grew manifold at the prospect of a good kill and meal. Keeping the dogs at bay with the stick. I managed to catch hold of the baby langur tail just as it tipped over the edge of the tiled roof. The baby appeared inert and lifeless. It was indeed a male baby

अचानक बदललेली परिस्थिती आणि अज्ञात ठिकाणाहून झालेला अनपेक्षित हल्ला यांमुळे त्या वानराला व्हरांड्याच्या उतरत्या छपरावरती पिल्लाला टाकून पळून जाण्यावाचून पर्याय उरला नाही. ते पिलू अगदी गलितगात्र आणि अर्थमेले झालेले होते. त्याचे शरीर उतरत्या छपरावरील खाली घसरायला लागलेले पाहून आयती शिकार मिळण्याच्या आशेने कुत्र्यांचे घोळके आणखी चेकाळले. हातातल्या काठीने कुत्र्यांना दूर ठेवत मी छपरावरून खाली पडण्याच्या बेतात आलेल्या त्या वानराच्या पिल्लाची शेपूट पकडली. ते पिल्लू निश्चल आणि निष्प्राण झाल्यासारखे वाटत होते. आणि हो, ते खरोखरच नर पिलू होते.

 

By this time, my parents and sisters had come out on to the veranda and were witnessing my rescue operation. Some of our neighbours had also gathered in the distance.

            आतापावेतो, माझे आई वडील आणि बहीण व्हरांडा यामध्ये येऊन माझे बचावकार्य पाहत उभे राहिले होते. आमचे काही शेजारीही दूर अंतरावर गोळा झाले होते.

 

I took the baby langur to our backyard and gently laid him on the floor inside the poultry coop His body was full of deep bite marks and scratches. Blood was oozing from some of the wounds. The baby remained motionless. My father provided first aid to clean the wound and stop the bleeding. I was relieved to find out that the baby was breathing, even though his breaths were shallow

    वानराच्या पिल्लाला मी आमच्या परसबागेत घेऊन गेलो आणि त्याला कोंबड्यांच्या खुराड्यामध्ये अलगदपणे झोपवले. त्याचे शरीर खोल जखमांनी आणि व्रणांनी भरून गेले होते. काही जखमांमधून रक्तही उधळत होते. पिलू निपचित पडले होते. माझ्या वडिलांनी प्रथमोपचार करून त्याच्या जखमा स्वच्छ केल्या त्यामुळे त्यातून रक्त यायचे थांबले. पिल्लाचा स्वासोच्छवास मंदावलेला असला तरी तो चालू आहे. हे पाहून मला हायसे वाटले.

 

Splashes of cold water made the baby stir and after a few shaky attempts, he sat up. He was in state of shock and started trembling like a leaf in the wind. His two little twinkling eyes welled up with tears and he started to sob with a muffled cry - just like a human child would after experiencing trauma. I offered him a peeled banana which he accepted with his unsteady hand and began taking hesitant bites.

पाण्याचे हबकारे मारल्यावर पिल्लाला शुद्ध आली आणि पडपडत प्रयत्न करून ते कसेबसे उठून बसले. ते भेदरलेले पिलू वाऱ्यामुळे होणाऱ्या एखादया पानासारखे थरथरत होते, त्याचे दोन चिमुकले लुकलुकते डोळे पाण्याने डबडबले आणि दबक्या आवाजात हुंदके देऊन ते रडू लागले-अगदी घसा बसलेल्या एखादया माणसाच्या लहान मुलाप्रमाणे, मी सोलून दिलेले केळे त्याने धरधरत्या हाताने घेतले आणि विचकत विचकत ते खाऊ लागले.

 

 My attention was fixed on the revival of the baby langur. Suddenly. I had an uncanny feeling of being watched. I tumed away from the coop and looked up. There sat the mother langur on our kitchen roof, watching every move I made. She simply sat there quietly, as if convinced that no harm was being done to her child

वानराच्या पिल्लाच्या प्रकृतीत सुपरणा व्हावी याकडे माझे सर्व लक्ष लागले होते. त्याच वेळी आपल्यावर कुणीतरी लक्ष ठेवून आहे, अशी एक विचित्र जाणीव मला झाली. खुराड्यातून मागे वळून मी वर पाहिले तर आई वानरी आमच्या स्वयंपाकघराच्या छतावर बसून माशी प्रत्येक हालचाल निरखत होती. जणू काही आपले पिल, सुरक्षित आहे याची खात्री पटल्यामुळे ती शांत बसून होती. 

 

Meanwhile, the baby sensed the presence of his mother and started to sob and cry a little louder. I retreated from the door of the coop to allow the mother access to her baby.

    दरम्यान, त्या पिल्लाला आपल्या आईच्या तिथे असण्याची चाहूल लागली आणि ते मोठ्याने हमसून रडू लागले. आईला तिच्या पिल्लाकडे जाता यावे म्हणून मग मी खराड्याच्या दारातून माघारी वळलो.

 

Immediately, the mother descended on the floor of the coop and picked up the baby in her ams. She gave the baby a thorough body inspection to check his injuries and then cuddled him tightly in her bosom. The baby found great solace in her caring arms. The mother sat still with the baby in her lap for a few minutes. It was almost as if she was pondering over her options and trying to figure out how she could keep the baby safe from further assault.

त्याची आई ताबडतोब खाली उतरून खुराड्यापाशी आली आणि पिल्लाला तिने आपल्या हातांत उचलून घेतले त्याच्या शरीरावरील जखमांची तिने बारकाईने, कसून तपासणी केली आणि आपल्या छातीशी घट्ट कवटाळले. तिच्या मायेच्या मिठीत पिल्लाला दिलासा मिळाला. काही मिनिटे त्याला मांडीवर घेऊन आई वानरी तशीच बसली. बहुषा पुन्हा हल्ला झाला तर पिल्लाला वाचवण्यासाठी काय करता येईल याचा ती विचार करीत असावी.

 

For a few seconds, the mother langur looked straight into my eyes. Even today, I cannot forget that look in her eyes, showering silent gratitude on me for saving her child. I was overwhelmed by the emotion, the sentiment and the way she said thanks to me. There sat a universal mother holding a stricken child in her lap.

        काही क्षणांसाठी त्या आई वानरीने माझ्या डोळ्यांत डोळे घालून पाहिले. आपल्या पिल्लाचे रक्षण केल्याबद्दल मूकपणे कृतज्ञता व्यक्त करणारे तिचे डोळे मी आजही विसरू शकत नाही. तिच्या डोळ्यांतले ते भाव आणि माझे आभार मानण्याची तिची पद्धत पाहून मला भरून आले. माझ्यासमोर आपल्या दुःखीकष्टी बाळाला कवेत घेऊन दिलासा देणारी साऱ्या विश्वाची माता तिथे बसली होती. 

 

 

Then, in a flash, she jumped with her baby clinging to her belly and reached our kitchen roof. She surveyed the area for the visions male langur and then leapt away in the direction opposite to the place of the violent encounter.

    त्यानंतर क्षणार्धात आपल्या पिल्लाला पोटाशी घेऊन तिने आमच्या स्वयंपाकघराच्या छतावर उड़ी मारली. त्या निर्दय नर वानराचा कानोसा घेत तिने आजूबाजूचा परिसर निरखला आणि ज्या बाजूने तो भीषण हल्ला झाला होता त्याच्या विरुद्ध दिशेला झेप घेतली. 

 

The brief meeting with the mother and the baby langur convinced me that interspecies communication and mutual trust is indeed a reality and should anyone strike the right chord, the relationship hums into action. The mother langur showed me that food was not the only means of communication between man and animal but that there were other means of establishing a bond through trust, compassion and mutual understanding.

    एका आई आणि पिल्लाच्या त्या ओझरत्या मेटीने मला खात्री पटली की प्राणिमात्रांचा एकमेकांतील संवाद आणि परस्पर दृढविश्वास ही खरोखर सत्य गोष्ट आहे आणि एकमेकांच्या मनांच्या तारा जर योग्य रीतीने छेडल्या गेल्या तर ते नाते अधिक सुरेल बनते. आई वानरीने मला दाखवून दिले की मनुष्य व प्राणी यांमधील संवादाचं साधन फक्त अन्न नसून त्यांच्यातील नाते दृढ होण्यासाठी परस्पर विश्वास, अनुकंपा आणि सामंजस्य यांसारखे इतरही अनेक मार्ग आहेत.

 

Fifty-five years have passed since that day. I am now seventy years old. But I still fondly remember that encounter of a special kind'.

    त्या दिवसाला आता पंचावन्न वर्षे उलटन गेली आहेत. मी आज सत्तर वर्षांचा आहे. पण त्या अविस्मरणीय भेटीची आठवण मी आजही माझ्या उराशी प्रेमपूर्वक जपली आहे.
